1. Create a folder/directory on your
hard disk and name it ry-tibdict3.
2. This folder is now c:\ry-tibdict3
3. Now copy ry-dic2003.txt
from the CD. This is the "master dictionary file",
and the search programs of your choice, and there are several
good search programs here, should point to this file. The
dictionary will run faster off your hard drive, and that will
also leave the CD drive free for other uses.
4. Next, copy the search program of your
choice from the RY Dictionary CD to its own folder on your
hard drive.
5. Use the settings feature
of that program to point to the "master dictionary file."
6. Try searching for a word, for instance
"ka dag".
Lay-out of the CD:
After copying the files onto your hard
drive to your chosen location, for example, c:\ry-tibdict3,
follow the instructions below for installing and using the
DSearch, Tib Thob, and Tibetan Translation Tool search programs.
Make sure you have copied the ry-dic2003.txt
dictionary file to the c:\ry-tibdict3 directory
on your hard disc. The program is preset to find this file.
Open the dsearch subdirectory and double
click on the dsearch dsearchp.exe icon to
run the program.
The program will search whatever file you choose as your dictionary,
such as, for example, the Rangjung Yeshe Dictionary. To choose
a dictionary, you need to tell the program where the file
is. Do this by clicking on the Options pull-down
menu and selecting Edit Glossary Font List.
A dialog box will appear. Click on Add File,
and browse to select the RYdic03.txt file, then click Open,
then click OK.
In the Glossary Files
window on the right of the DSearch
program’s main screen, click on the small drop-down
arrow and the path and file name of the dictionary you just
selected will appear. Select it, and make sure it appears
in the Glossary Files window. The program
is ready to use. Please note that although you can use DSearch
with more than one glossary (dictionary), only one glossary
file can be active at a time. To add additional dictionaries,
just repeat the procedure above.
To use the search program, type the Tibetan
term you are searching for, using Wylie transliteration, in
the Search Text window. Then click either
Search or Search All. The
first option will give you all the definitions that start
with the term you have entered. The Search All
option finds all entries which contain the text you’ve
entered, whether or not it is the first word in the entry.
In the Search Text window
there is also a drop-down arrow which can be used to display
the entries you’ve previously searched for so you can
search for them again without having to re-type them.
You can also customize the type face
and size of the display font, by selecting Font
from the pull-down Options menu.
There is a file named readme.txt (or
dsearch.txt) in the dsearch subdirectory that provides additional
information about the DSearch program, including information
about how to create your own glossary files.
To use the Tib Thob Tibetan Search program
with the Rangjung Yeshe Dictionary, you must first run the
setup program for Tib Thob by double clicking on the tibthob-setup.exe
file under the Xavier Franc's Tibthob directory.
Next, Tib Thob will prompt you for the
name and location of the dictionary file to use. Assuming
you have copied the dictionary files onto your hard drive,
provide the file name and path here and click Open. If you
are working from the CD, browse to d:\ry-dictionary2003\ry-dic2003.txt.
If you want to change dictionaries or
add a new one, you can do so from the main menu bar by selecting
Options, Setup Dictionary.
Tib Thob works similarly to DSearch, but adds additional capabilities
for searching. Next to the Search button
on the left, there are two other buttons that let you refine
your search in two ways:
1) You can define where to search: a)
in the entry header (in general), b) at the beginning of the
entry header, c) in the definitions, or d) anywhere.
2) You can define which kind of text
you are looking for: a) simple (Wylie) text, b) approximate
syllables, or c) phonetics (when setting up the dictionary
you can choose between English and French phonetics).
You can also refine your search by specifying
what to include and exclude in your search, and you can customize
the window displaying the search results using various colors
and indentation depths for the entries and the definitions.
Tib Thob has more options for searching.
Please see the Tib Thob User’s Manual included on the
CD for more information about using Tib Thob.
Refer to one or the other of two files
in the Tibetan Translation Tool subdirectory: quick
start guide.txt or readme.htm for
instructions on installing and starting the Tibetan Translation
Tool. Note, however, that two changes apply:
1) The web address listed in these files
for downloading the Java Runtime Environment is out of date,
but will still take you to the download area of Sun’s
Java web site. Once there, follow the links to download the
latest version of the Java Runtime Environment (J2SE), and
download that. (At this writing, the latest version is J2SE
1.4.1.) Download time with a 56 K modem is about 25 minutes.
2) There is no need to unzip the Tibetan
Translation Tool file. It has already been unzipped and is
in the Tibetan Translation Tool subdirectory on the Rangjung
Yeshe Dictionary CD.
After installing and starting the Tibetan
Translation Tool according to the instructions, the Tibetan
Translation Tool will ask you if you want to open the file
named dictionary/ ry-dic2003.txt.
Unless you have saved the Rangjung Yeshe Dictionary under
that subdirectory with that file name, click Cancel. Then
go to the File menu and select Open
Dictionary. Browse until you find the dictionary
file on your computer (or on the CD if you are running the
dictionary from the CD), and click Open.
The Tibetan Translation Tool is now ready to use.
1. Install Sun's JRE v. 1.4 or higher,
if available for the platform where you want to run the tool.
Otherwise get the latest version available making sure to
avoid the problematic versions.
2. It is recommended that you copy the TranslationTool folder
together with its contents to local folder such as c:\program
files\Translation Tool
3. Simply double-clicking on the DictionarySearchStandalone.jar
file (included in this folder) should load it. Nevertheless,
it is recommended that you install the Translation Tool Web
Start Application available from the Translation Tool's website
(http://www.people.virginia.edu/~am2zb/tibetan/). It can run
off-line, and if you are on-line it will automatically check,
download, and install up-dates for you. The first time the
application runs, the wizard window will pop-up automatically.
Later you can always load it by selecting File -> Open...
from the menu.
- If you choose to access an on-line dictionary, connection
to the Internet is needed.
- Use the second option to access a local dictionary databases
such as "public" (the database included in this
folder that contains Jeffrey Hopkins' Tibetan-Sanskrit-Dictionary
version 2.0.0 and The Rangjung Yeshe Tibetan-English Dictionary
of Buddhist Culture) or any other dictionary you have created.
- The third option lets you create a dictionary database from
text file dictionaries you have purchased. If you have several
text dictionaries, you only need to generate one dictionary
database. Currently the following formats are allowed: dash-separated
dictionaries, tab separated dictionaries, delimiter specific
dictionaries, and ACIP's scheme of transliterated dictionaries.
See below the specific syntax of such formats.
Note: as opposed to the stand-alone application, when importing
dictionaries transliterated using ACIP's scheme, the wizard
will automatically convert the file from ACIP to extended
wylie for you. Don't convert it to wylie!
Please visit the Translation Tool's website at
for additional documentation. Happy translating!
